Hi, I'm Deb Adams. My background is in neuropsychology and neuroscience, and my passion is everything brain related! I'm particularly excited about brain plasticity (the fact that our brains are always changing and changeable) and what this means for enhancing every aspect of our lives.

Happiness and energy levels boosted

Happiness

Have you ever had one of those “everything’s going wrong” days? Of course you have, everyone does. Apparently we have on average, three times more positive than negative experiences, but because of the way our brains are wired, we tend to give more weight to the negative ones, so they’re the ones we remember most. Plus, our brains get “habituated” to the positive ones, meaning your background level of positive experiences just becomes your “norm” and you need more of them to get a happy buzz.

So now for the good news. Recent research shows that simply talking about your positive experiences makes you happier. Lambert and colleagues found that when people shared their positive experiences with a supportive person, their life satisfaction, happiness, and energy levels increased.

Tip for the day: boost your happiness and energy levels by sharing your joy!

Why is mental health such an important issue in the workplace today?

Firstly, psychological problems are estimated to affect 45% of people at some stage in their life, and as many as 20% of the population in any given year.  And secondly, don’t most of us spend around half of our waking hours at work? Mental illness doesn’t discriminate on the basis of employment status; we bring our mental health problems to work just as we bring our physical health problems to work.  More importantly for this discussion, the number of people experiencing mental disorders as a result of their work environment is on the rise.
